The fastest browser in town

Opera Web Browser from Opera Software

A while ago I got sick of being forced to use the bloated, inefficient and slow browsers that the 'big two' - Microsoft and Netscape - produce. I don't need a million features that I'll never use, I don't want a piece of software that takes over my desktop, or fills up my hard drive. I just want to surf the web with style, speed and ease of use. The Opera Web Browser, from Opera Software in Norway, is quite simply one the best applications I've ever used.

Just a few of it's features -

  • Download file around 2Mb in size!
  • Easy to install, doesn't mess up system settings.
  • Leaves your desktop the way it was.
  • Speed - I mean this browser is fast !
  • Supports JavaScript, multiple windows, all the cool stuff.
  • Compatibility with most current plugins.
  • Could run off a floppy disk !
  • Adheres to HTML standards - amazing !
  • Runs happily on older machines - 386's and 486's.
  • Available in 16-bit and 32-bit, for Windows 3.1 and 95.
  • It's just cool, okay ?

You should check out Opera if you do any sort of serious surfing. Just run it alongside your current browser, and see the difference. Now, this isn't a HUGE internet 'all-in-one' suite. Opera allows you to manage email, read newsgroups and surf the web. But primarily it is a browser, and does a really good job at that.

The current version is 5.01. Version 4.0 was a big change for Opera. This version added the full featured email client, and enhanced newsreader. Version 5.0 was also a radical departure for Opera. This is the first version that is completely free of charge, not time limited, and with all features intact. It is advertiser supported, in a much more secure way than most other software. Check out their website if you have any security concerns. All this with a download file below 2Mb !

Oh, and something else - Opera is worth paying for...

So, download Opera and give it a go. Currently it only supports Windows, but big plans are afoot to port it to heaps of other platforms. Let me know how you go!
