Demo Reviews

RelcalchrateTen tracks of noisy crust recorded live at the Arthouse with lots of banter going on between band and the drunker punks in the audience. The twin female vocals make them a bit different to other bands around although they still have the grunt in growly bits

Gonzo's Moonwombhome burned CD cover
CD from local art-noise outfit, mixing Zappa jazzyness in the song "G-Neric" with some loud punky songs like "Water it Down Some More" and with the trumpet at times like the old Breatherhole.
The songs have weird titles like 'Pinecones from the Grave of Clancy" and "Onan the Librarian" and "the Outsider" breaks from a churchy organ sound to a Residents type noise track.

Resurrection EveBand live at Punters

Five track demo released as a sampler for an upcoming album, very clever idea as each song is completeed they can burn it to CD and always have upto date trakcs. Opening with 'Way out' slow Bauhaus number with what sounds like strings and a choir. Next track 'Ancient Curse' has a drum machine track and phased guitars. And then 'Cliche', the big ballad with treated vocals and some interesting noises.'Repunsel' has the nice spinnet sound again with big ballad type vocals and the CD finishes with a My Dying Bride cover 'For My Fallen Angel.
Bloodmusic

warning signBeer Goggles

Seven tracks of pop punk fun with a theme of ..drinking is good. Starting out with 'No Comply' which brings to mind MYC/One Inch Punch with the driving beat and strained vocals and lyrics about loss of freedom and being forced into conformity. Other songs deal with organized religion 'Prey' and technology, 'Technology' and not being pushed around 'My Life.

 Rachael-Mental Guitarist

This CD and its companion 'Desert Songs' was released as a posthumous tribute to Rachael by her family and friends. The songs range from heavy grind numbers like opener 'Lusty Poochy' and 'I'll see You on the Moon', busking songs and a full work out like 'Transvestite' with saxaphone and all.
At times it sounds a bit hippy girly like the song 'I am a tree' and very spacey in 'I don't know why'. The other CD 'Desert Songs' goes for a more experimental style with feedback guitar and white noise for a hypnotic ambient sound.

Album of the Week

Chalice
From Adelaide classed as Goth/Black Metal with female vocals and piano and a violin they have a very orchestral sound which they use to build up to some quite strong sounds where the guitars get loud. Lyrically the themes to be death and lonelyness, very Goth.

Asscancer
Great collection of almost industrial sound very hard Ministry stuff, mixed with lots of samples from TV shows.

Opener 'Bloodhoney' sets the tone, loud and distorted. 'Evil against Evil' is almost pure noise.'To Kill a Pig' slows things down to almost gothic atmospherics while 'All Violators' is based on funk sounds and could be a dance track.

Dandelion Wine-tunguskabutterfly
Starting out with some gentle acoutic number 'Begin Journey' there is a suprise when the distorted fuzz guitar kicks in. Vocalist Naomi sounds at times like Kate Bush and at others a more bluesy belter. You get waves of gentle hypnotic music with flute thenit get loud and rocking.

Split live album from two of Melbourne's wildest acts. Recorded as part of a series to document the scene at the Arthouse Hotel this catches some wild drunken moments.
Headcase put up a few old songs like 'William is a Crusty' and 'Punk Rock Cliche' while Softcocks put down nearly their whole set including 'GI Jerkoff', 'Jesus is Kinky' and a cover of Seven Seconds 'Bully'.

Not At All-We have skits and hidden tracks
N.A.A even use a N.U.F.A.N type logo with a cartoon character and shaded lettering, very pop-punk and the guys have fun names likeJerkface, Poopy Head and Undecided.
Opening track on the CD 'Punk Rockers Ballad' is a bit Propaghandish, while '140' gallops along like NoFX and 'You're Mine' includes a ska middle break.

KTVcover of CD
Six track EP starts with "2 Minute Fling" with a very pop punk riff. Kath's slightly ocker accent gives the songs a bit of bite, although "Not There Now" sounds almost like Blondie rather than a generic riot grrrl.

The Nothings-A Lot to learntrack list from CD
Produced by Steve Jones
And very well done, starting with "A Lot to Learn" the guitar work is very Pistols only the vocals are more american. "Horrible Suspicion" is almost an answer song to "Bodies"...'It could be yours, and it could be mine'.
And "Nineteen Thirty Three" is probably a follow up to "Belsen was a Gas". A very genuine 77 punk outfit.

Kokoshkar-allah akbar overdrive
This Cd sounds a lot different and a lot tighter than an incarnation of Kokaskar thet I've heard playing around Melbourne.
Starts of with 'Crow River' which is very tuneful and then build up to a punk thrash. Second song 'Death and Destruction' has emoish vocal over some spacey noises and lots of the songs have doodley bits.
'Boogie' with the slow vocals and mellow sax could be a Laughing Clowns song and 'Almost a Good Time' has female vocals contrasting with the emo screams.

Foxymorons-Calcutta
Low-fi indie duo with a sound something like Dinosaur Jnr, jangly guitar wordy emo lyrics, although track four 'Almost Active' borrows very closely from the Beatles "In My Life'.
The very next track 'Reel-to-Reel' rocks out with some fuzz guitar and space invader noises. Other tracks like 'Hands on Presentation' sound like Brian Wilson, or some Lou Reed as singer-song writer.

22 Jacks-Going North
These guys were back in Australia to promote this new CD. At times the vocals sound like Elvis Costello and lots of the songs have a new wavish/Cars sound. The song 'Without You' is about the Vans tour downunder and feeling homesick. The horns on some of the tracks give it a R'n'B sound. Another song 'Medicated' has a punk ska chunka chunka.
Vetran players in the band have probable made it in various styles to keep the music interesting.

Never Give In-Bad Brains Tribute
Very clever this CD is programmed so that the last track goes with the first track to make for endless loops. Moby's version of 'Sailin' On' is one of the more interesting a spooky slow drift. The hardcore bands like Ignite and Snapcase just blast through although Boy Sets Fire on 'I Against I' has a nice vocal sound, and it is intersting to see that Entombed and Sepultura pay tribute to a great band.

Lower East Side Stitches-STJA98L.E.S
Bratty punk rock from New York starts of with the very Sex Pistols styled 'Down The Drain' and then gets into more of a Oi style with 'Naked A' the story of roadie Brian (Naked a) Manning. Other songs are about being on the road 'Unload/Reload', how bad New York is 'Could Just Die','NYC is Dead', getting drunk 'Drink Some More'and growing up' Another Letdown'. Overall with the snotty vocals of Mick Brown LES Stitches sound like the punk side of Rancid, ie no Ska just punk rawk following more from the eighties hate core GG Allin scene than NYHC or The Ramones although they give thank yous to Joey Ramone and Agnostic Front.

Walsh Street Cop Killers-We're still Slaves
Opening with a cover of AC's 'Deformed' this CD from WSCK shows the more metal influences of news guys Rob, Paul and Ben with long time drummer Justin contributing an old song from his band Pet Earwig.
Johnny's vocals still have the rough punk sound but everything is played faster and harder. Songs include 'Deceived' and 'Tell'em' about corrupt politicians, 'Eureka Stockade' a history lesson and songs about drugs, war and the pub crawl.
The CD finishes of with the old crowd favorite from Johnny's Bastard Squad days, the Sreaming Lord Sutch song 'Jack the Ripper'. The secret track is a live recording from Sydney of the old band. Much more crusty with Kirsty on vocals.

The Loiterers/Endangered Feces-Something for the Kids EP
Four songs each from some New Yorks tough guy bands.Endangered Feces have a NoFx/Bad religion sound, with some sense of humour on tracks like,'John Bobbits Prayer' and the very brattish soundin 'Attempted Birdhouse. 'Sniffin Gasoline' starts off with some acoustic guitar before taking off and for old school fans 'Don't drink the milk' consists entirely of the whooah wooh chorus and no lyrics.
The Loiterers have a gruffer gargelly vocal sound which sounds appropriate in the song 'No Tomorrow' a song about nuclear war. The other songs are more positive, 'Feel Alright' about going out to a punk show and 'Happy Song'.
