TILTON RACING CLUTCHES

Clutches

1987 saw the first ever Formula 1 victory by a car using a carbon fibre Racing Clutch. The clutch was made by Tilton Engineering.

Lotus

In the last 10 years Tilton have developed a complete range of Carbon Fibre, Sintered Metallic and "Button" type racing clutches which are winning all round the world.

Size and torque capacity ranges are: (size = diameter of clutch driven plate)

  1. 5" (128 mm) 420-630 lbf
  2. 5 7/16" (138mm) 250-705 lbf
  3. 5 1/2" ( 140mm) 250-750 lbf
  4. 7 1/4" (185mm) 150-1200 lbf
  5. 8 1/2" (215mm) 275-700 lbf
Note that torque capacity of the clutch depends on the number of plates in the clutch - usually 1 to 4 plates - and the strength and ratio of the diaphragm spring.

Tilton clutches are entirely suitable for Racing V8s, 2 Litre Touring Cars, Open Wheel racers of any type, Oval Track, Rally cars, Off-Road race cars - just about any competition application.

ROAD CAR USE: With the exception of Carbon fibre or "Button" type 8 1/2" (215mm) Twin Plate clutches Tilton Racing Clutches are NOT RECOMMENDED for use on the street. The 8 1/2" unit, with suitable flywheel, or modifications to the existing flywheel is an excellent conversion for very high performance V8s, and other vehicles such as the Nissan Skyline GT-R. The Carbon Fibre clutch is extremely drivable, snatch and chatter-free, the button type is a little harsher.

Selection of the correct Tilton racing clutch is fairly technical, so call us to discuss your particular application.
