Family History and Other Interests

Soon after the first Cornish Association of New South Wales Pages and our interests in the history of families from Cornwall were presented, visitors put forward a variety of suggestions about how they might interact with and provide information for others to peruse and contact them. Our project pages on Byng, Cadia and Cobar have added markedly to Cornish family queries.
Recurrent topics were the initiation of searches using surnames of ancestors in and from Cornwall, the tracing of their descendants in Australia and the presentation of queries which might lead them to information on the history of families in and from Cornwall, and in Australia.

The Table below provides a means of listing your surname (and maybe first name) interests in Cornwall and in Australia, the locations (parish, village, town, Australian State and so on) which could be of value to you in your investigations, together with your name and postal and email addresses. If you are a member of the Cornwall Family History Society or of a Cornish Association or other family history group in Australia, we suggest you send initials of the society and your membership number if provided, as this may generate contacts for you from other organisations.

The first entry in the table will give guidance on the presentation. Note that the Chapman Code is used to abbreviate the County name in the British Isles and overseas places are abbreviated in the same form for the State and Country.

If you wish to place surname entries in our list, email John Symonds.
Please give appropriate details to go under ALL of the headings set out in the table.
Do not forget to include dates or a range of dates of interest to your research; for example, c1850 or 1805-1870.
These are always important for other researchers to recognise a genuine interest in your information.
Be specific about what your requirements are.

If there is any problem associated with presentation of the material you have provided, you will receive a query from us, aimed at giving browsers a better understanding of your needs. Remember! Send your full postal address as well as your email address.
Otherwise, John Symonds receives your direct mail.

Surnames Index

As the Table grows in size, a particular surname would be hard to find without an alphabetical List. Click on the surname of interest to go to the section where it is entered. Click on any "Index" label in the right hand column of the Table to go back to the Index List.

Family Queries

In giving the surnames of ancestors, queries can arise in a more detailed form about some member of the family. For this purpose, we have a query series to give an opportunity to set out a problem which the particular researcher is facing. Such queries are set out below.

If you have some information about one of the queries or are interested in what is in a specific query, please contact the researcher direct by email and/or provide any information which you wish to exchange by postal service.

John Symonds is searching for information on:
CLOGG - Richard Clogg was employed at the Crimplehorn Mill, now called Crumplehorn above Polperro in Cornwall, either as the Miller or his Assistant around 1810. The mill was the manor mill of Killigarth. Ann Clogg was born there and baptised at Talland. Richard became the miller at Corgallen, just a short distance from Morval, around the period 1813-1815. Other children were born there according to the church records at Morval and the family must have been living at East-Well nearby. Any information on the birth place of Richard and his upbringing prior to going to Crimplehorn would be much appreciated.

Charles Lowe is looking for information on Edward OLVER born 28 July 1798 in Gorren Haven CON. His parents are believed to have been Edward Olver and Ann nee Tucker who were married on 7 March 1791 at Gorran CON. Charles married Elizabeth HUGOE (b. 31 Dec 1797 Gorran CON) on 13 September 1823 at Goran CON. Elizabeth's parents are believed to have been William Hugoe and Mary nee Williams who were married on 9 September 1790 at Gorran CON. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Brian Jelbert keeps the database for the Jelbert Family History Society which is researching the origins of and links between the several family lines bearing the names JELBERT, JILBERT and JELBART that originated in Cornwall. The earliest records date from about 1600. There are some 4,500 names on the database and the Society has about 70 members worldwide, including many in Australia. The names Jelbert, Gribble, Clifton and Temby are all found in the earliest parish records of south west Cornwall (Gulval, Sancreed and Camborne).
Brian would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in these names and in joining the Society.

Helen Sherringham has been investigating the origins of her HUGO family in Cornwall and has some considerable success with our help, both in Cornwall and Tasmania.
Edwin Nicholas HUGO married twice, making research difficult. The first marriage was to Ann MERRIFIELD 5 Oct 1829 at Bodmin CON. Their first child was George Trevalyn HUGO b. c1830 CON. The family travelled from Cornwall to Fremantle and then to Tasmania. Arthur Merryfield was born at Hobart TAS AUS 23 Oct 1843. Ann Hugo became ill and the family all returned to Cornwall where Ann died.
Maria BOUNDY was employed to care for the family in Cornwall with two children (John and Lilly) with her. These two children were related to her but it is not known in what way. Maria married Edwin Nicholas Hugo 22 May 1873 at Ladock CON. Trevanion (Helen's GGF) was born in CON 11 Dec 1873 and baptised on 5 Jul 1874 at Ladock CON but the birth was registered in TAS. It appears the family set sail from CON when Trevanion was an infant, settling at Meander TAS. A sister Arabella was born 1875 in TAS. Deaths of family members are all registered in TAS except for Ann, the first wife.
Edwin's parents were Thomas HUGOE and Isabella and they had two daughters and another son: Arabella Barbara Pyle HUGO bp 1804, Mary HUGO bp 1807 and Fred William Nepean HUGO bp 1809. All the children were baptised at Lostwithiel CON. The parents of Maria BOUNDY were Samuel and Elizabeth BOUNDY.
Helen is rather pleased with her work in tracing many of the movements. She would appreciate continued contacts with others about her ancestors.

Charlie Tredrea is seeking information on his Cornish Tredrea ancestors and their movement to and in Australia.
Thomas Tredrea was born at St Hilary CON and had seven children all born in St Hilary - Sarah (18 Oct 1757), Thomas (9 Sep 1759), William (23 Aug 1761), Abraham (16 Oct 1763), Elizabeth (31 Mar 1766) and Mary (6 Jul 1772). A daughter born before Mary died as an infant.
Charlie is interested to find information about anyone who may have sailed with Richard Leah Tredrea (carpenter) who was born in Gulval CON. He married Eliza Curnow. They sailed from Plymouth DEV on the Shand on 27 Oct 1854 and landed in Portland VIC on 20 Jan 1855 with two children, William and Richard.
Charlie is aware that some Tredreas went to Sydney and Albury, and to South Australia and would like to contact any of those who have descended from these emigrants.
He is most interested in his GGF Jonathon Tredrea who served in the 104th Regiment of York in India in 1864, was a builder subsequently, married in Adelaide in 1880 and died in Broken Hill in 1893. While in South Australia, Jonathon built the famous lighthouse at Corny Point on the "toe-joint" of Yorke Peninsula. In Broken Hill in 1888, he also built what is now known as the Uniting Church.
Any advice on any of these interesting items would be welcomed by Charlie Tredrea.

Kay Williams is searching for information on a considerable series of Cornish Surnames mentioned in the Surname Table and has some background on each:
--James BARGWANNA was a tin miner, born in Gwennap CON, married Caroline JEWRY in Carharrack CON and they emigrated on theHarbinger, arriving Sydney NSW AUS on 15 Feb 1848 with three children: George (b.1841 Gwennap CON; m. 5 May 1864 Orange NSW Elizabeth HOCKING), Thomas (b. c1844 Gwennap CON; m. 1889 Mary GILLS) and Elizabeth Jane (b. c1848 Gwennap Con; m. 1 Mar 1864 Orange NSW John JOB). They moved to Orange NSW and possibly Byng where six more children were born thereabouts: James, Mary T (m.1866 Orange NSW Frederick Augustus SARA), Emma J (m. 1893 G. PERRY), Henry (m. 1879 Elizabeth Ann ESLICK), William Henry (m. 1884 Hannah GAYNOR) and Caroline (b.1863).
--John HOCKING was born in Cornwall in 1819 and married Mary Ann PASCOE in Sithney, Helston CON. John, a gold miner, emigrated unaccompanied on the Aden, departing ex London on 12 Sep 1849, arriving at Adelaide SA AUS. It appears that he had moved to NSW because Mary Ann departed with four children on the Kate, arriving Sydney NSW on 18 Nov 1854. The children were Mary Ann (b 1841 Helston CON; m. Simon ESLICK), Susan (b. 1843 Churchtown Sithney CON; m. 1858 Richard Harris ESLICK), Elizabeth (b. 19 Mar 1848 Plymouth DEV; m. George BARGWANNA), John Henry (b. 19 Mar 1848 Plymouth DEV; m. 1871 Amelia BOWHAY), Martha (b.1856 Byng NSW?, d. 1860). When John HOCKING Snr died in 1898, the family was living at Middle Creek, Orange NSW.
--John William SOWDEN was born in Cornwall and married Elizabeth HOCKING in 1838. The family emigrated on the Velocity, arriving Adelaide SA AUS on 25 Jun 1855 with three children: Annie (b. 1842 Liskeard CON; m. 1862 Wentworth NSW William Henry McMahon), John (b 1847. Liskeard CON) and Jane (b. c1851). The family spent four years in SA. Annie McMahon ended up in Forbes NSW after several years on isolated station properties. Her father was living at South Lead, Forbes at that time and died there. Kay Williams would be interested to know more of their movements and would welcome any information that could be provided.
--In 1901, Simon H. Verran married Emma Anne HANCOCK (b1879 Young NSW AUS). They had a son John Daniel Thomas VERRAN born 4 Aug 1908 in Orange NSW and he first married Lillian SMEATON with whom he had two sons, Daniel and Maurice John. He was married a second time to Audrey Fanny TREANOR. It is understood that he was related to the HANCOCK family of Forbes NSW, one member of whom, Kevin Ford HANCOCK married Shirley TREANOR, a younger sister of Audrey Treanor.
Kay would welcome any assistance that can be given on any of these families.

Marilyn Wara has real difficulties in finding the Cornish birthplace of her grandparents Charles and Mabel CLEMO. Her parents have been dead quite a while so that information about the Clemo family has been dispersed or lost. Charles Clemo served in WWI, joining in England. Mabel must have been despatched to Canada near the outbreak of WWI and had her son Darrel Kitchiner Clemo born on 9 Nov 1916 in Ottawa. It is not clear in what part of the services Charles served but he was obviously in Canada after the war. Darrel married Beatrice Joyce Haywood on 15 Jul 1938 in Montreal, Quebec, enlisted in WWII in the Air Force on 18 Feb 1943 and was discharged on 24 Aug 1946 at Lachine, Quebec. This service record disclosed the name of his parents and their birth in Cornwall.
Marilyn, Darrel's daughter, has not found further records for her grandparents Charles and Mabel Clemo nor Charles' service record to assist her in finding their Cornish home area. She would be delighted to hear from anyone who could help her establish her Cornish ancestry links.

Sherrie Ford is anxious to find where her Cornish ancestors came from in Cornwall to go to Ballarat in Victoria AUS. Her 2xGGF Samuel WILLIAMS was a stonemason and married Elizabeth TUBB in Cornwall in 1836. Two of their children were born in Cornwall and three in Victoria. They emigrated to Victoria somewhere in the period 1848 to 1851 where one child was born in Collingwood and the next two in Richmond. They eventually settled in Ballarat where Samuel, as a stonemason, may have been involved in the construction of statues in the main street of Ballarat. Their son Samuel was born in Cornwall in 1839 and married Esther JANE (nee Heydon?) in Ballarat where they had seven children, number five being Sherrie's GF Alfred George.
Sherrie would welcome any assistance given in finding the place in Cornwall where her 2xGGparents were born, raised and married.

Shirley Nitz would appreciate any information on the TOM(S) families in Cornwall, particularly in the area around Minster, Advent and Boscastle CON. William TOMS b.1820 at Advent CON married Eliza BROAD at Advent CON in 1843 (both mentioned in the table above).

Jean Lapthorne would appreciate contact with others interested in the DUNN family who originated in Breage in Cornwall, eventually emigrated to South Australia in 1855 and finally moved on to Shepparton in Victoria AUS. To add to the information in the table, Daniel DUNN Snr had five children in Breage CON; Ann b 1794,Mary b 1795, Jennifred b 1796,Daniel b 1798,John b 1803.
Daniel Jnr had three children born at Ashton CON;John Moyle b 1824,Mary b 1826, Elizabeth b 1829.
John Moyle DUNN had five children;Elizabeth Ann b 1859,Sarah stillborn, John Daniel b 1853,Mary Ann b 1859 Maldon VIC,Sarah Rebecca b 1856 The Lodden VIC
John Daniel DUNN had ten children, all born in Shepparton VIC;John William Henry b 1880,Arthur Ernest b 1882,Lillian May b 1885,William Richard b 1887,Raymond Leslie b 1892 K.I.A. France 1917,Victor Charles b 1894,Olive Mary b 1895,Gertrude Mabel b 1898,Jessie Rebecca b 1900.

Carole Baxter is researching her KERNICK family. Although she has the basic information on those with that name, she knows nothing of the women who married into the family. There were two cousins who married so that cut out a few outsiders! Working back from the 17th Century, their names were Wilmot ?, Alice ?, Jane Key, Eleanor Coz(s)ier, Martha Burnett/Barrett, Elizabeth Jacka, Karenhappock May, Mary Ann Tabb and Isabella Fraser. She is also interested in Ann Palmeer who married a 5xGUncle Kernick as there is another Palmeer in a different, non-Cornish part of the family tree. She is related by marriage to others who all married Kernicks and lived in Perranzabuloe - John Mitchell, Anne Walls and Jane Paull. She would be delighted to hear from anyone with any of these people listed in their family.
