[Broomball] History

Broomball commenced in Australia in Canberra (ACT) in 1981, and was introduced by expat Canadians based in the Canadian Embassy. The sport quickly spread to South Australia in June 1982. The first National titles were held in Canberra at Easter 1984, and have been held each year (at differing venues) since.

In 1988 an Australian team (co-ed) toured Canada, playing in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia.

In 1991 two Australian teams (co-ed, men's) toured Canada as preparation for the 1st World Broomball Tournament held in Victoria, British Columbia. Broomball is currently played in Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Townsville, (there are less than a dozen ice rinks in all of Australia). Broomball in South Australia is played all year round. Two 1995 Australian teams attended the Broomball Mania 8 Tournament, held in Eugene, Oregon, USA in June. Although an Australian team did not make it to the 2nd World Tournament (Challenge Cup 96)in Victoria, BC, in November 1996, Three Australian Representatives did.
