units. The Town was named after one of the important people in Tipton County,
and Tennessee history. Munford was not the first choice for the name, however,
the community was originally known as Mount Zion, Tennessee. When the town
wanted to get a post office, the US Postal Service was afraid (in the time
before postal codes), that Mount Zion, Tenn. would be confused with a currently
existing Mount Zion, in Pennsylvania. The city selected the name of Munford as a
compromise. The cemetery in the county capital (Covington) is named after Mr.
Munford, which is really confusing to new residents who ask "Why is the
Munford Cemetery in Covington?".

The area was once known as Big Buffalo Crossing and is often now called Munfordsville, although the "s" is no longer in the official name. The Munfordsville Court House post office opened in 1820.

Mary Cooke Branch Munford (16 Sep 1866 - 3 Jul 1938) was the first woman Visitor, serving from 1920 to 1925. She was from a prominent Richmond family. Her husband Beverly Bland Munford had been a student at William and Mary College Williamsburg and had served on the Board from 1888 to 1909. Mrs. Munford worked hard to provide better educational opportunities for all children. In addition to being William and Mary's first female Visitor, she was also the first woman to serve on the Richmond School Board. Later, she was a trustee at the University of Virginia. Mrs. Munford had also worked for the Co-operative Education Commission, which had sought to establish a co-ordinate women's college at the University of Virginia. Named in her honour is the Mary MUNFORD elementary school in the near West End of Richmond located at 211 Westmoreland Street 23226 and a Mary Munford Park at 211 Westmoreland Avenue 780-6009. She is buried in the Richmond Hollywood Cemetery.

Munford’s in RICHMOND Virginia
There were Munford’s in Richmond, Virginia in the 1800's & early 1900's. Beverly B. MUNFORD, a Richmond Attorney and historian delivered an address at the unveiling in 1899 of the statue of Jefferson DAVIS near his grave. In 1916 he lost by two votes in the General Assembly an effort to gain admission for women to the University of Virginia. He also authored a book on Virginia's Attitude Toward Slavery and Secession originally published in 1909 and now in paperback; 330 pages. He was founding partner of 1901 the famous international Law Practise Hunton & Williams then known as Munford, Hunton, Williams & Anderson Lawyers.
In 1926 the Virginia flag that had been taken from the pole atop the Capitol by a federal officer on April 3, 1865 was returned to Richmond by the officer's grandson. Two sisters - Misses Sallie MUNFORD, later Mrs Charles H. TALBOTT and Margaret MUNFORD identified the flag as the one they had made.
William MUNFORD, a scholar and translator of Homer, had a notable residence on 6th Street and the Southwest corner of Canal in Richmond, Virginia. He gave an eulogy at the funeral for Chancellor George WYTHE.
About this time there was a black aristocracy in Richmond composed of butlers, coachmen and maids of leading families. A slave named Beverley had become well educated and much impressed William MUNFORD. In spite of laws against teaching slaves, this slave's mother had been taught to read by William Munford’s sisters, Mrs. KENNON & Mrs BYRD and she in turn had schooled her son.

Munford’s in Maryland
The Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware and north eastern Virginia have been termed the Del-Mar-Va peninsula.. The area of Wicomico and Worcester Counties has been the focus of research between Salisbury, Berlin, St. Martins and Ocean City on the Atlantic shore. Early arrivals maintained an active trade connection with England for years by engaging in shipping and trade. A genealogical archive at The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum Ocean City is available on line, and the historic St. Martin's Chapel.
Later generations, including four previous generations of Mumford grand parents ventured westward as agricultural land became scarce along the coastal areas with an expanding population. A group of Mumford men with families including married Mumford sisters and their families banded together in a caravan of oxen and horse drawn wagons and trekked to the vicinity of Columbus, Ohio and after an extended period of about three years to work seasonal crops and birth new babies, continued on through Woodford Co., Illinois for a briefer time, then on into lands opening up in central Iowa. They purchased land in Lucas County, Iowa and settled on adjacent farms. Children of these growing families in turn moved in to areas further out on the Great Plains grasslands. Some of those families ventured into nearby Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.

Lewis Sims Munford was born about 1850 in Georgia. He was the son of Lewis Martin Munford from South Carolina. Lewis Sims gave the Mary Munford Memorial Library in Cartersville in her memory.
