There are no known references to the family in the first fleet. However the National Archives of Ireland make reference to a James Munford aged 18 years who went to trial in County Armagh for Larceny on 07/08/1841 and was sentenced to seven years Transportation to Australia. As yet we have been unable to confirm on which ship he travelled and whether or not he survived the journey.

The notorious Second Fleet did contain two felons surnamed Mumford for details of their story click here.

Also from the book Ships of Australia & New Zealand Before 1850 by Ronald Parsons we learn that she was a two masted schooner Reg No ON31713 and that she had various owners in Australia between 1840-1856 mainly in the Hobart area. We note too that she was finally wrecked off Dunedin in South Island New Zealand in 1861.

First Settlers

Official Registry Records indicate that the first Munford born in Australia was a girl, MARY A, in 1834. Her parents were Thomas & Mary and she was born in Sydney. Nine years later on 7th June 1843 we have the first marriage between William MUNFORD, 22 years and Susan SHANNON, 23 years recorded in HOBART. The first record of a death was in 1855 for Matilda J MUNFORD, 25 years of age on the Burnett River, Wide Bay Queensland.
