Pioneering in Southern Saskatchewan
An early settler and pioneer was Ellis Munford, who migrated to Canada, at age 31, from Liverpool on the ship SS Circassian of the Allan Line under the command of Captain Reg Barrett. He arrived in Halifax on 5th May 1888. Ellis was one of nine brothers and one sister. His parents were Robert Munford DOB 1821 and Susan Millar and they came from Winfarthing, Norfolk County, England. Ellis was the eldest. For further details on this family visit www.munfordfamily.com.
Ellis found work as a railroad worker for the Grand Truck Railway later known as the Canadian National Railway. He soon decided that the life in Canada was better than being a farm labourer in England so he sent for his wife Hannah Eagle, their four daughters and one son, Alfred who was 1 year, 3 months and 2 days old. They left England in October of 1888 from Liverpool on the ship SS Parisian, captained by WH Smith and landed in Montreal, on the 4th November 1888. Ellis and Hannah settled in Harriston, Ontario where they lived from 1889-1892 when they moved to a gravel road between Harriston and Catwald, where Ellis tried his hand at farming. Hannah died in 1893 and though Ellis twice remarried there were no more children and he died on 2nd April 1923 in Niagara Falls N.Y.

Another reference we have been able to find was from the Daily Star Sault Ste Marie dated Tuesday October 30 1917 which gives an obituary for The Reverend Thomas Harper Nettleship Munford MA. Rev Munford was the first full time Rector to be appointed to the Anglican parish of Copper Cliff Ontario. He served this parish from August 1908 to 1912 and was much involved in raising funds and in the building of the present St John's Church which was dedicated on 13th July 1911.
